Some artworks begin in the present moment, and others begin long before you realise what they’ll become.This week’s process and inspiration post goes back to 2008/2009, when I first created the original background on Photoshop that later evolved into my two Playa Victoria pieces.
Those early images were simple observations of the Cádiz shoreline: the long horizon, the empty expanse of sand, the strange stage-like feeling of standing in a place where the whole world seems to pause. For years, these works sat tucked away, waiting.
A decade later, I returned to them — layering new photographs, colour work, and texture, blending past and present into something new. The beach became a kind of theatre: a place of repetition, transformation, entrance and exit, light shifting across an enormous stage.
Revisiting old work is its own conversation.
Memory meets technique.
Place meets time.
And something quiet becomes something alive again.
These two Playa Victoria artworks are the result of that long arc, beginnings from 2008/9, reshaped with the eyes and tools of now.

La playa como teatro — Proceso e inspiración
Algunas obras comienzan en el momento presente, y otras empiezan mucho antes de que te des cuenta de lo que llegarán a ser.
La publicación de proceso e inspiración de esta semana vuelve a 2008/2009, cuando creé por primera vez el fondo original en Photoshop que más tarde evolucionaría en mis dos piezas de Playa Victoria.
Aquellas primeras imágenes eran simples observaciones del litoral de Cádiz: el horizonte interminable, la extensión vacía de arena, esa extraña sensación de estar en un escenario donde parece que el mundo entero se detiene. Durante años, esas obras quedaron guardadas, esperando.
Una década después regresé a ellas, superponiendo nuevas fotografías, color y textura, mezclando pasado y presente para crear algo nuevo. La playa se convirtió en una especie de teatro: un lugar de repetición, transformación, entradas y salidas, la luz desplazándose sobre un escenario inmenso.
Revisitar un trabajo antiguo es una conversación en sí misma.
La memoria se cruza con la técnica.
El lugar se cruza con el tiempo.
Y algo silencioso vuelve a cobrar vida.
Estas dos obras de Playa Victoria son el resultado de ese largo arco: comienzos de 2008/2009, reformulados con los ojos y las herramientas de hoy.

Today’s update is something especially close to the heart that featured recently on a process / inspiration post.
A Tree Through the Generations is now available as a greeting card (A6 & A5), a piece that began decades ago with a quiet painting by my grandmother, Mary Castle. Her original tree, rooted and patient, became the foundation for a new digital reimagining, created through layers of colour, light, and texture.
This card carries both artworks in conversation: The first, painted by hand and the second, rebuilt through my process of blending layers of colour (including a layer by artist Anna Bellinger), and light.
It’s a reminder of how memory travels, how creativity continues, and how art can move through time and still feel new. Whether sent as a message or framed as its own artwork, this card holds a story of connection and renewal.

Mary Castle Reimagined

Mary Castle Reimagined: a work that began with a simple painting that has always been part of my life and grew into something layered and alive.
The original brushstrokes belonged to my grandmother, a painter of quiet trees and calm horizons. Years later, I have revisited one of her works digitally, blending her tones and textures with my own and drawing inspiration from the intuitive colour sense of Anna Bellinger (@absowm_art), whose palette added a new depth to the piece.
It became more than an artwork, it became a conversation between generations, between pigment and pixel, between memory and light.
Sometimes inspiration doesn’t arrive new; it returns, asking to be seen again in another way.

Mary Castle Reimagined, una obra que comenzó con una sencilla pintura que siempre ha formado parte de mi vida y creció hasta convertirse en algo con más capas, luz y vida.
Las pinceladas originales pertenecían a mi abuela, una pintora de árboles tranquilos y horizontes serenos. Años más tarde, he vuelto a una de sus obras de forma digital, mezclando sus tonos y texturas con los míos, e inspirándome en la sensibilidad del color de Anna Bellinger (@absowm_art), cuya paleta aportó una nueva profundidad a la pieza.
Se convirtió en algo más que una obra de arte, una conversación entre generaciones, entre pigmento y píxel, entre la memoria y la luz.
A veces la inspiración no llega nueva; regresa, pidiendo ser vista de otra manera.

Sometimes it starts with a single frame, the way sunlight touches a crumbling wall, the shadow of a palm leaf, the quiet air in Plaza de Mina.
This was the original photo that became the artwork, a simple moment of LOOKING UP, transformed through a simple added texture or two from my background collection.
The creative process, for me, often begins like this: standing still, noticing the rhythm of light, and letting a place slowly tell its story.
__________A veces todo empieza con una sola imagen: la forma en que la luz toca una pared desgastada, la sombra de una hoja de palmera, el aire tranquilo de la Plaza de Mina.
Esta fue la foto original que dio lugar a la obra, un momento sencillo de mirar hacia arriba, transformado con una o dos texturas de mi colección de fondos.
El proceso creativo, para mí, suele comenzar así: quedarse quieto, observar el ritmo de la luz y dejar que un lugar cuente su historia poco a poco.

Process & Inspiration
Most of Clarence’s writing begins outdoors, in the garden, surrounded by light and sound: thoughts arriving between the flight and song of birds, the rustle of leaves, and the soft turning of the day.
Writing, for Clarence, is an act of quiet attention — a way of grounding the senses and shaping them into rhythm and reflection. Some pieces grow from a single image; others from the feeling of simply being there, open to what the world is offering.

A flashback to 2007: photo taken by Anna @absowm_art not long after my arrival in Spain. Hanging out in La Caleta in the old VW van, rubbing tomato on toast, and listening to the soundscape of Cádiz.
In those first few months I was still finding my way, but the light, and love, had already found me. They’ve stayed with me ever since, shaping so many of the artworks, written words, and the person I’ve become.
Just one of many beautiful moments and strong memories from back then the beginning of everything that followed.

Un recuerdo de 2007: foto tomada por @absowm_art poco después de mi llegada a España. Pasando el tiempo en La Caleta, en la vieja furgoneta VW, untando tomate en el pan y escuchando los sonidos de Cádiz.
En aquellos primeros meses aún estaba encontrando mi camino, pero la luz, y el amor, ya me habían encontrado a mí. Desde entonces me acompañan, dando forma a tantas de las obras, las palabras y la persona que soy hoy.
Solo uno de tantos momentos y recuerdos hermosos de entonces, el comienzo de todo lo que vino después.
